PREP has provided a high quality Early Childhood Services (ECS) program for over 33 years. Our goal at PREP is to provide an enriched learning environment with therapy services tailored to meet each individual child’s unique needs as they prepare for a successful transition into Kindergarten and beyond. Our program prides itself on:
- Administering the Program Unit Funding (PUF) grant for families who have an eligible child
- Small class sizes
- Large, bright classrooms with excellent resources
- Certified teacher with aide support leading the program
- Individual and group therapy services, including Speech-Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Music Therapy, and Physiotherapy
- Parent education and involvement
- Community preschool placement options
Program Unit Funding (PUF) is provided to school authorities for ECS children with severe disabilities/delays who require additional support beyond what is offered in a regular ECS program. PREP’s ECS program is offered for 2 consecutive years starting when the child is 2 years and 8 months old by September 1, and who have been identified with a severe disability/delay. In addition, we encourage the inclusion of peer models within all of our ECS classes to provide our PUF eligible students with support from their typical peers. Since our peer models are ineligible for PUF funding, a monthly fee will apply for those students.
At PREP we believe that PUF eligible children benefit from both group and individual therapy. While participating in classroom based activities, each child will have the opportunity to work on their therapeutic goals with support from our multidisciplinary therapy team, including a Speech-Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Therapy Assistants, Physiotherapist, and Music Therapist. In addition, children at PREP receive one individualized speech session and one individualized occupational therapy session each month. Children are accompanied by a parent during these individual sessions, which makes this a great time for families to learn from the therapists in order to use similar strategies and techniques at home.
IPPs and Reporting
The multi-disciplinary ECS team meets with parents throughout the year to review IPPs, discuss progress, identify concerns, and make recommendations and/or referrals. Goals and objectives are set for each child’s learning in specified areas of development. Parent input is valued and welcome so that expectations, goals, and strategies are consistent between home and school.
Community School Placements/Visits
In year 2 of ECS, parents have the option to register their child for preschool in the community placement of their choice. It is PREP’s responsibility to hire, supervise, and train the Education Assistant to work with your child and to work in partnership with the community preschool. Parents are encouraged to regularly volunteer in class and share updates with the Teacher and EA.
Peer models are an important part of PREP’s ECS program, which we believe creates a rich learning environment for both our PUF eligible students and their typical peers. As a peer model, your child will be a part of a robust ECS program that prepares all students for a successful transition to Kindergarten and offers a unique opportunity to participate in engaging learning activities facilitated by a multidisciplinary therapeutic team. All peer models will have access to the same in-class therapeutic activities, but will not participate in individual one-on-one therapy sessions. To attend PREP as a peer model there is a monthly fee and parents can choose to register for classes 2, 3, or 4 days a week.
